Applying for jobs and hearing nothing back? What to do
Updated 30 October 2026 · 4 minute read
You're not imagining it. Many employers receive far more applications than they can read, and plenty never reply to people they don't take forward. It's frustrating and it isn't fair, but it's rarely about you.
Apply to fewer, better-matched jobs
Ten well-matched, tailored applications usually do better than fifty quick ones. Look for jobs where you meet most of the essentials, including through transferable skills.
Tailor the top third of your CV
Recruiters often decide in seconds. Make sure your profile and first few bullets speak directly to the job.
Apply early
Some employers review applications as they arrive and close adverts early when they have enough. Applying in the first few days helps.
Track and follow up
Keep a list of where you applied and when. If a closing date passes with no news, a short polite follow-up is fine. KindHire checks in with you after 10 days and helps you chase.
Favour employers who reply
Every employer that posts on KindHire promises to reply to everyone by a set date, and you can see their record. For other companies, KindHire shows what other jobseekers report about hearing back.
Look after yourself
Job hunting is tiring. Set a weekly target you can manage, take breaks, and talk to people you trust. If it's getting you down, your GP or the free Shout text line (text 85258) are there to help.
